AhlulBayt News Agency (ABNA): Prominent Bahraini human rights defender Nabeel Rajab is spending another birthday behind bars this year.
Rajab, who is serving a 7-year prison sentence for criticizing Manama’s human rights record, turned 54 on Saturday.
Online activists are expected to launch a Twitter campaign later in the day calling for the activist’s release under the hashtag #FreeNabeel.
Earlier this week, 127 rights organizations echoed those calls while welcoming this month’s “landmark opinion” by the United Nations Working Group on Arbitrary Detention, which determined that Rajab’s incarceration is arbitrary and discriminatory.
Rajab was arrested in June 2016 and faces additional charges related to his criticism of the regime in Manama.
