Bahrain's Diraz residents take to streets amid continuing ban on Friday prayers

Scores of local residents in Bahrain’s northwestern village of Diraz took to the streets on Friday reaffirming their support for the country’s highest religious authority Sheikh Isa Qassim.

AhlulBayt News Agency (ABNA): Scores of local residents in Bahrain’s northwestern village of Diraz took to the streets on Friday reaffirming their support for the country’s highest religious authority Sheikh Isa Qassim.

Protesters held up posters of the senior cleric, who is still undergoing treatment in the United Kingdom.

Sheikh Qassim was hospitalized in late June after spending more than a year under house arrest. He was eventually permitted to leave Bahrain and seek treatment abroad.

Friday’s protests were organized near Diraz’s Imam Al-Sadiq Mosque where a ban on Friday prayers remains in place.

The introduction of the ban in June 2016 came shortly after Sheikh Qassim was stripped of his citizenship for speaking out against the regime in Manama.
