AhlulBayt News Agency (ABNA): Bahrain’s leading opposition movement labeled the continuing imprisonment of one of its former deputies, Sheikh Hassan Issa, as ‘political revenge’.
In a statement released on Saturday, Al-Wefaq National Islamic Society reiterated its call for Sheikh Issa’s immediate release as he marked three years behind bars.
Sheikh Issa is serving a ten-year prison sentence after being found guilty of allegedly “funding terrorism” in connection with a 2015 bombing on Bahrain’s Sitra Island.
Rights groups say that the conviction against Al-Wefaq’s former deputy leader is politically motivated.
According to Al-Wefaq’s statement, Sheikh Issa’s detention ‘has nothing to do with the law.’
Describing Sheikh Issa as one of the most prominent advocates of peace in Bahrain, the group added that his imprisonment reflects the failures of Manama’s policies.
