AhlulBayt News Agency (ABNA): Prominent Bahraini detainee and Jiu-Jitsu gold medalist Mohamed Mirza reportedly declared the start of a hunger strike on Saturday in solidarity with fellow prisoner Hassan Mushaima.
Mushaima, a Bahraini opposition leader who is serving a life sentence for his role in the kingdom’s 2011 pro-democracy protests, is being denied access to proper medical treatment despite his deteriorating health.
His son, Ali Mushaima has been observing a separate hunger strike outside the Bahraini embassy in London where he has been camped out for nearly three weeks now.
For his part, Mirza is also protesting his own lack of access to proper health care as well as the restrictions imposed during family visits at Bahrain’s Jaw Prison.
Prior to launching his hunger strike, Mirza is said to have filed complaints with Manama’s oversight bodies but to no avail.
Mirza was arrested in March 2011 and later sentenced to 20 years in prison for allegedly kidnaping a police officer.
The athlete won a gold medal for Bahrain in a Jiu-Jitsu world championship held in Brazil in 2008.
