AhlulBayt News Agency (ABNA): Bahrainis took to the streets on Tuesday to mark 47 years since their country gained independence from British colonial rule.
Those who took part in the peaceful marches vowed to ‘preserve the sovereignty’ of Bahrain in what was also a protest against the presence of foreign militaries in the Persian Gulf kingdom.
In a number of Shiite villages, the Independence Day marches quickly descended into anti-regime protests.
Activists later circulated images online showing Manama’s security forces peppering the protesters with tear gas in Abu Saiba, Shakhura and Ma’ameer.
