AhlulBayt News Agency (ABNA): Manama’s security forces are continuing to ban Bahrain’s Shiite worshippers from congregating for Friday prayers in the Kingdom’s northwestern village of Diraz.
This despite the purported lifting of the two-year long ‘siege’ on the village.
In a statement released on Friday, Diraz’s residents noted that Friday Prayers “are purely a religious rite.”
“No party has the right to impose restrictions on performing [Friday Prayers],” the statement added. “The authorities are openly seizing the right to perform religious rites.”
According to the residents, this Friday marks the 118 consecutive weeks since the ban went into effect.
Rights groups accused Manama of subjecting Diraz’s roughly 30,000 residents to collective punishment.
The ban was imposed after local residents expressed solidarity with the Bahrain’s highest religious authority, Sheikh Isa Qassim, who had his citizenship revoked in June 2016.
