AhlulBayt News Agency (ABNA): Bahrain’s Public Prosecution extended the detention of Mohammad Khatam for an additional week for having defaulted on his debt payments.
Khatam was detained earlier this month and initially charged with ‘illegal assembly’ after staging a one-man protest for having been wrongfully terminated by Bahrain’s Ministry of Municipalities Affairs and Urban Planning five years earlier.
Moments before his arrest, Khatam shared a video on his Twitter page, explaining his intentions and holding up a handwritten sign addressed to the Bahraini monarch that read, ‘I can not support myself, my wife and my family’.
Rights campaigners have accused Manama of discriminatory practices against Bahrain’s Shiite majority, which spill into employment, and social welfare.
