Bahraini Shiite cleric: 'Sheikh Isa Qassim is in stable condition, high spirits'

Bahrain’s leading cleric Sayyed Abdullah Al-Ghoraifi told Shiite worshipers that the country’s highest religious authority Sheikh Isa Qassim is in stable condition.

(AhlulBayt News Agency) - Bahrain’s leading cleric Sayyed Abdullah Al-Ghoraifi told Shiite worshipers that the country’s highest religious authority Sheikh Isa Qassim is in stable condition.

Speaking during a sermon at Manama’s Imam al-Sadiq Mosque on Thursday evening, Sayyed Al-Ghoraifi said that Sheikh Qassim is continuing to receive treatment at a hospital in London and that he remains in high spirits.

Sheikh Qassim travelled to the United Kingdom earlier this month after spending more than a year living under house arrest.

The ailing cleric, who is a central figure in Bahrain’s popular uprising, was arbitrarily stripped of his nationality in June 2016 and confined to the northwestern Bahraini village of Diraz.

Last May, Manama’s security forces stormed his home, killing five people in the process.

Rights campaigners have blamed Manama for Sheikh Qassim’s deteriorating health, accusing the regime of denying him access to proper medical care.
