(AhlulBayt News Agency) - Bahrain’s religious scholars or the Ulama accused Manama of attempting to ‘slowly kill’ the country’s highest religious authority Sheikh Isa Qassim, who is currently receiving medical treatment in the United Kingdom after spending more than a year under house arrest.
“The regime is responsible for the deterioration of the health of the people’s Sheikh and the leader, His Eminence Ayatollah Sheikh Isa Ahmad Qassim, as well as the very dangerous stage that he is currently at,” an Ulama statement issued on Friday reads.
The statement adds that Sheikh Qassim was the victim of a “systematic targeting … carried out in an open manner”.
Sheikh Qassim, who is a central figure in Bahrain’s popular uprising, was arbitrarily stripped of his nationality in June 2016 and confined to the northwestern Bahraini village of Diraz.
Last May, Manama’s security forces stormed his home and placed him under house arrest.
