(AhlulBayt News Agency) - Manama’s security forces began removing concrete barricades around the home of Bahrain’s highest religious authority Sheikh Isa Qassim shortly after he departed for London to receive medial treatment.
Sheikh Qassim had been confined to Bahrain’s northwestern village of Diraz since June 2016 when he was arbitrarily stripped of his citizenship and eventually placed under house arrest.
Since then, Diraz’s 30,000 residents have been subjected to an unprecedented lockdown in what rights groups described as collective punishment.
On Tuesday, police checkpoints in and around the Diraz neighborhood where Sheikh Qassim’s home is located were finally removed.
Although some news reports have suggested that the Diraz ‘siege’ may be lifted in the coming days, images circulating online showed that armored vehicles were still lining the streets in the village.
