(AhlulBayt News Agency) - Residents in the northwestern Bahraini village of Diraz took to the streets on Friday in show of solidarity with Bahrain’s highest religious authority Sheikh Isa Qassim.
Protesters held up posters of the senior cleric, who remains in hospital after undergoing surgery earlier in the week.
Sheikh Qassim was placed under house arrest last May and since then his health has dramatically deteriorated.
Friday’s protests took part near Diraz’s Imam Al-Sadiq Mosque where a ban on Friday prayers remains in place.
Earlier in the day, the kingdom’s security forces enforced the ban by deploying armored vehicles while placing concrete barricades and police checkpoints across the village.
The introduction of the ban in June 2016 came shortly after Sheikh Qassim was stripped of his citizenship for speaking out against the regime in Manama.
