(AhlulBayt News Agency) - Manama’s courts stripped another five Bahrainis of their nationality on Monday, bringing the total number of citizenship revocations this year alone to just over 230.
Two of the defendants were convicted on ‘terrorism’ charges and also slapped with lengthy prison terms.
In a separate case, a group of men were found guilty of belonging to the outlawed February 14 Youth Coalition and three had their citizenship revoked.
Rights groups estimate that the number of citizenship revocations in Bahrain since 2012 currently stands at over 735.
The right to a nationality is enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights to which Bahrain is a state party.
