A senior Iranian cleric has issued a message reacting to a recent note by 300 French political figures demanding removal of Qur’an verses on Judaism.

(AhlulBayt News Agency) - A senior Iranian cleric has issued a message reacting to a recent note by 300 French political figures demanding removal of Qur’an verses on Judaism.

Ayatollah Jafar Sobhani, senior Shia cleric has responded to a new petition by 300 French political figures criticizing Qur’an verses on Judaism demanding those verses to be removed from the holy book.

Iranian scholar in his message referred to increasing spread of Islam in Europe while no military and political power is behind the holy religion stressing rationality of the people and the innate nature of Islam as the reasons behind the achievement.

He warned that the global tendency for conversion to Islam has frightened political figures who hatch different plots to prevent the expansion of Islam amongst people.

“A heinous plot for enemies of Islam is to rebuild the holy book of Islam in order to provide enough pretexts to accuse it of distortion” said the cleric and added that the move means to fade the attractions towards Islam.

He referred to background of efforts to manipulate with Qur’an verses and said signatories of the petition have not learnt the lesson history has taught them noting,” This move is only meant to win the satisfaction of Zionists.”

Ayatollah Sobhani stressed,” Signatories of this proposal are endeavoring to win the satisfaction of Zionists though in our view orthodox Jews loyal to their religion are distinguished from murderer occupying Zionists” and added,” While the former are esteemed in all Islamic countries the latter are abhorred by all Muslims due to the crime they commit.”

Previously a manifesto published in the French daily Le Parisien on April 21—signed by some 300 prominent intellectuals and politicians, including former President Nicolas Sarkozy and former Prime Minister Manuel Valls made the shocking demand arguing that the Quran incites violence, it insisted that “the verses of the Quran calling for murder and punishment of Jews, Christians, and nonbelievers be struck to obsolescence by religious authorities,” so that “no believer can refer to a sacred text to commit a crime.”

Days after the manifesto’s release, 30 imams signed a counter-letter in Le Monde. The Observatory for Islamophobia, an organization affiliated with the Egyptian government, described the manifesto as “hateful racism” that proves that “France is not a land that welcomes Islam.”

The demand has also drawn much criticism among Muslim scholars across the globe.
