JAKARTA, Indonesia (AhlulBayt News Agency) - A member of the Shia Muslim Sampang community from Madura, East Java, died in a refuge. "Yes, it is correct, [the resident] passed away last night," said Nur Kholis, one of the refugee when contacted by Tempo on Thursday morning, June 14, 2018.
Kholid said that the resident was identified as Kurriyah, 24-years old. Kurriyah died in the Dr. Soetomo hospital in Surabaya because of suffering from tumor and bone tuberculosis.
Kurriyah was one of the hundreds of Shia refugees living in Jemundo flats in Sidoarjo since 2013. They were evicted from their village following attacks by Saudi-funded extremists back in 2012.
Before living in Jemundo flats, the refugee spent almost a whole year living in Sampang Sports Arena from August 2012. The death of Kurriyah adds up to the long list of Shia residents who died in the refuge.
Previously, a 65-years old Sampang Shia refugee Busidin died in 2015 because of medical complications. Busidin's body was buried at the Delta Praloyo Asri cemetery in Sidoarjo because residents of Busidin's home village, the Blu'uran Village, refused to bury him in the village.
Kontras condemns police for obstructing burial of Sampang Shiite
The Surabaya chapter of the Commission for Missing Persons and Victims of Violence (Kontras) condemned the police for obstructing the burial of Kurriyah, 24, a member of the Shiite community in Sampang, East Java.
“We urge the National Police chief to investigate,” Fathkul Khoir of Kontras said on last Thursday.
On Wednesday, Kurriyah’s body was brought first to Puspa Argo low-cost apartments in Sidoarjo on the outskirts of Surabaya, which have been turned into a Sampang Shiite relocation site in recent years.
His family planned to bury him in Karanggayam village, Sampang.
However, they later received information from the Sampang Police that the village head opposed the plan.
The police later visited the apartment and ordered the family to take Kurriyah’s body to a hospital in Sidoarjo instead. The family declined and insisted on transporting it to Sampang using an ambulance.
But when the ambulance arrived at the premises, a group of people believed to be police officers took control of it.
Another ambulance later managed to transport the body to the island, but was stopped on its way to the village by the police who asked the entourage to take the body back to Sidoarjo.
