(AhlulBayt News Agency) - IFEX, a global network of over 100 NGOs, is calling on supporters to join its Twitter campaign demanding the release of Bahraini human rights defender Nabeel Rajab, who marked two years behind bars on Wednesday.
Rajab was arrested by Manama’s security forces on June 13, 2016 and has since been sentenced to 7 years in prison.
Earlier this month, a Manama court upheld a 5-year jail term in one of the cases against the activist related to critical tweets about the Saudi-led war in Yemen and Manama’s mistreatment of prisoners.
Rajab is also serving a separate 2-year sentence over television interviews.
During his time in detention, he has repeatedly been subjected to ill-treatment and denied access to proper medical care.
According to the activist’s family, Rajab is currently being denied surgery for a skin condition and is held in a ‘cramped, dirty, and insect-infested cell’.
