(AhlulBayt News Agency) - Amnesty International has called on its Urgent Action Network to urge Manama “to release Nabeel Rajab immediately and unconditionally, to quash his convictions, and halt all proceedings against him as he is a prisoner of conscience, detained solely for peacefully exercising his right to freedom of expression.”
The call came after the prominent Bahraini human rights defender had his 5-year prison sentence upheld in relation to peaceful tweets about the war in Yemen and allegations of torture in Bahrain’s Jaw Prison.
Amnesty is also demanding that Manama guarantee “Nabeel Rajab is not subjected to torture or other ill-treatment; has regular access to his family, lawyers of his choice, and adequate medical care”.
Rajab is also serving a separate 2-year sentence over television interviews and faces additional charges over op-eds published in western newspapers.
