(AhlulBayt News Agency) - Bahraini Shiite cleric Sayed Kamel al-Hashimi was taken into police custody at the Manama airport on Thursday as he attempted to board a flight to Iraq.
While waiting to be transferred to a nearby police station, the cleric said in a social media post that he was planning a religious visit to the Iraqi city of Karbala.
The reasons for his arrest remain unknown.
In March 2016, Sayed al-Hashimi was sentenced to three years in prison for allegedly insulting Bahrain’s King Hamad, and inciting hatred against a religious sect during one of his sermons.
But last month, Bahrain’s top court overturned the verdict and referred the case back to the appeals court.
Rights groups estimate that more than 50 Bahraini Shiite clerics have been convicted and sentenced by Manama’s courts in recent years.
