(AhlulBayt News Agency) - Manama’s appeals court upheld a 5-year prison sentence against Bahraini human rights defender Nabeel Rajab on Tuesday.
Rajab was convicted in February for “deliberately disseminating in wartime false or malicious news … offending a foreign country … [and] insulting a statutory body.”
The charges stem from mere tweets about the Saudi-led war in Yemen and Manama’s mistreatment of prisoners.
International rights groups have repeatedly called for Rajab’s immediate and unconditional release, accusing Manama of violating the activist’s right to free expression.
Rajab is also serving a separate 2-year sentence over television interviews and faces additional charges over op-eds published in western newspapers.
