(AhlulBayt News Agency) - Al-Wefaq National Islamic Society documented 322 media items inciting hatred against its jailed secretary-general and Bahrain’s opposition leader Sheikh Ali Salman.
The smear campaign, dating back to last August, is apparently aimed at laying the groundwork for a guilty verdict in Sheikh Salman’s ongoing espionage trial.
The opposition leader, who is already serving a 4-year prison term, was charged with “spying for the state of Qatar” last November. The final ruling in the case is expected on June 21.
According to a statement released by Al-Wefaq on Saturday, the items in question were disseminated throughout Bahrain’s state-run media outlets.
16 appeared on the kingdom’s broadcast networks while nearly 120 other items were recorded in Manama’s leading newspapers including Akhbar Al Khaleej, AlAyam, and Al Watan.
An additional 112 items were posted on social networking sites.
