Activists demand release of blind Bahraini detainee

Maatouk, who is blind, was reportedly dragged from his cell in Bahrain’s Jaw Prison last week and chained for hours.

(AhlulBayt News Agency) - Online activists launched a Twitter campaign demanding the immediate release of Bahraini detainee Jaafar Maatouk following allegations that he is being subjected to severe torture.

Maatouk, who is blind, was reportedly dragged from his cell in Bahrain’s Jaw Prison last week and chained for hours.

Detainees at Jaw are routinely harassed by guards at the facility for speaking out against poor living conditions, observing Shiite religious occasions, and refusing to abide by abusive restrictions.

Maatouk’s family has voiced concern over the condition of their loved one after he was barred from contact with the outside world more than a week ago.

The disabled 27-year-old is serving a life sentence over what activists describe as politically motivated charges. Detained in 2014, Maatouk has also been stripped of his Bahraini citizenship.
