Activists show support for campaign urging Brazil to halt tear gas sales to Bahrain

In a show of solidarity with the campaign, the activists held up pictures showing the excessive use of tear gas by Manama’s security forces against peaceful anti-government protesters.

(AhlulBayt News Agency) - Activists taking part in the World Social Forum (WSF) in Brazil have voiced their support for an initiative by SALAM for Democracy and Human Rights, which calls on the Brazilian government to halt its sale of tear gas to Bahrain’s security forces.

In a show of solidarity with the campaign, the activists held up pictures showing the excessive use of tear gas by Manama’s security forces against peaceful anti-government protesters.

According to SALAM, more than 40 Bahrainis have died over the last seven years as a result of suffocation or injuries sustained by tear gas canisters being fired at civilians at close range.

The group also cited data by Physicians for Human Rights, which asserts that the use of tear gas in Bahrain during an 18-month period between 2011 and 2012 was unprecedented.

The Brazilian defense company Condor Non-Lethal Technologies has supplied Manama with over 20 types of different weapons in recent years.
