Nabeel Rajab sentenced to additional 5 years in prison

Rajab, the cofounder of the Bahrain Centre for Human Rights (BCHR), was arrested in the summer of 2016 and was already serving a 2-year prison sentence.

(AhlulBayt News Agency) - The prominent Bahraini human rights defender Nabeel Rajab was sentenced to an additional 5 years in prison on Wednesday over tweets that condemned the Saudi-led war in Yemen and Manama’s treatment of prisoners.

Rajab, the cofounder of the Bahrain Centre for Human Rights (BCHR), was arrested in the summer of 2016 and was already serving a 2-year prison sentence.

The charges in that case stemmed from television interviews during which Rajab merely told journalists that Manama bars reporters and human rights workers from entering Bahrain.

Wednesday’s conviction comes despite an international outcry calling for Rajab’s immediate and unconditional release.

The Director of Advocacy at the Bahrain Institute for Rights and Democracy (BIRD) Sayed Ahmed Alwadaei said that the “judgment is a prime example of how the Bahraini Courts are curtailing freedom of expression by deterring Bahraini citizens from criticizing its authorities.”
