New allegations of Abuse at Bahrain’s Jaw Prison spark calls for investigation

Abdulghani, who was sentenced in absentia to three years in prison over what rights activists describe as trumped-up charges, turned himself over to authorities earlier this week.

(AhlulBayt News Agency) - The family of a Bahraini detainee Jamil Abdulghani is demanding an investigation into allegations that their loved one is being subjected to brutal beatings by the authorities at the kingdom’s Jaw Prison.

Abdulghani, who was sentenced in absentia to three years in prison over what rights activists describe as trumped-up charges, turned himself over to authorities earlier this week.

An activist with the Bahrain Center for Human Rights (BCHR), Hussain Radhi, cited eyewitness accounts that revealed how Abdulghani was beaten upon his arrival at Jaw and was later seen lying on the floor of the prison clinic.

Radhi also recounted a conversation between Abdulghani and his family, during which the detainee was purported to have said that he “could not bear the beatings anymore”.

In April 2016, Abdulghani’s 17-year-old brother Ali was killed by Manama’s security forces for allegedly attempting to evade capture. He was wanted for taking part in pro-democracy protests.

For his part, Radhi echoed calls by Abdulghani’s family for an investigation into the alleged abuse, adding that the case is one of many within Bahrain’s prison system.
