(AhlulBayt News Agency) - The Imam of the Al Kheef Mosque in Bahrain’s northern village of Al Dair was placed under arrest after a Manama court sentenced him to three months in prison for ‘inciting hatred’ against the ruling regime.
Sheikh Isa Al-Moumin, who had already spent three months in detention over the same charge, repeatedly denied the allegations.
The charges relate to a sermon that Sheikh Al-Moumin delivered in July 2016.
Following his arrest on August 6 of the same year, the cleric’s attorney was prevented from seeing Sheikh Al-Moumin while he was being interrogated by agents of the kingdom’s security apparatus.
According to rights activists, the lawyer’s exclusion from this process is in itself a violation of Article 20 of Bahrain’s constitution.
The arrest comes amid Manama’s intensifying crackdown against Bahrain’s Shiite majority, which involves the jailing of clerics, opposition figures, activists and other community members.
