(AhlulBayt News Agency) - A former parliamentarian with Bahrain’s opposition Al Wefaq party has been taken into custody after a Manama court upheld his one-year prison sentence.
Sheikh Hamza al-Diri, who was accused of taking part in a peaceful sit-in outside the home of the country’s highest religious authority Sheikh Isa Qassim, was arrested in the courtroom on Wednesday.
Sheikh al-Diri was originally sentenced in October, but he stayed out of jail on bail during the appeal process.
The arrest is part of a much broader campaign against Bahrain’s opposition and other dissident voices in the country.
