(AhlulBayt News Agency) - Ahmed Ali al-Attiya became the latest resident of Bahrain to be deported after being accused of taking part in a sit-in outside the home of the country’s highest religious authority Sheikh Isa Qassim.
The now-former resident of Bahrain’s northwestern village of Diraz was handed over to authorities in neighboring Saudi Arabia. He spent nearly two months in detention prior to his deportation.
Born to a Saudi father and a Bahraini mother, Al-Attiya’s home was located in the same district as that of Sheikh Qassim. His two brothers have also been jailed.
Rights groups have repeatedly accused Manama of employing the policy of forced deportation in an effort to silence dissenting voices. Hundreds of Bahrainis face deportation after having their citizenship revoked in recent years.
