(AhlulBayt News Agency) - Members of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN) in Potiskum town, Yobe State, have called on the Federal Government to release their leader, Sheikh Ibrahim Zakzaky, over deteriorating health condition.
The IMN members began a peaceful protest from Kara area and terminated at Musa Lawan Hospital yesterday morning.
Addressing his followers, leader of the group in Yobe, Malam Ibrahim Lawan, said that the Federal Government was still holding their leader in contempt of a judgment passed by a competent court.
“Sheikh Zakzaky’s health condition continues to deteriorate in illegal detention, a condition calculated to bring about his physical destruction. He seriously needs to be allowed access to proper medical treatment. Even as the courts had passed judgement calling for the release of Sheikh Zakzaky and compensation for the illegal detention, government is still holding him almost a year after,” he said.
He said for the last 700 days of the ‘incarceration’ of Sheikh Zakzaky, his wife Zeenat and several hundred other members, the leader was allowed access to his lawyers only twice.
He said the Islamic Movement in Nigeria remained appreciative of all people and groups standing by them.
A protester was killed on Sunday in the northwestern state of Kaduna amid widespread demonstrations which were held in over 50 separate locations.
