(AhlulBayt News Agency) - Bahrain’s opposition Al-Wefaq party demanded that Manama release prominent Shiite cleric Sheikh Mahmoud al-Ali, who was taken into custody this week after a court upheld his 6-month prison sentence.
Al-Wefaq described the arrest as a reflection of the extent of Manama’s hostility towards religious freedoms in Bahrain.
In a statement released on Thursday, the group asserted that Sheikh al-Ali was charged and jailed over his support for Bahrain’s highest religious authority Sheikh Isa Qassim – another target of the kingdom’s judiciary and security apparatus.
Al-Wefaq added that Tuesday’s arrest was merely an extension of the regime’s persecution of dozens of religious scholars.
Sheikh al-Ali is the vice-president of Bahrain’s largest Shiite religious and cultural organization, the Islamic Scholars’ Council, which was dissolved last year after being accused of illegal fundraising and money laundering.
