Sheikh Ali Salman’s trial adjourned until January 4

A Manama court adjourned the trial of Bahrain’s opposition leader Sheikh Ali Salman until January 4.

(AhlulBayt News Agency) - Thursday’s postponement was the third in the case as the court reportedly waits to hear testimony from a prosecution witness.

Sheikh Salman, who is already serving a 4-year prison term, was charged with “spying for the state of Qatar” last month.

The charges stem from his contacts with Qatari officials, who acted as mediators during a 2011 US-GCC initiative aimed at resolving Bahrain’s political crisis.

The allegations have been widely discredited after it emerged that Bahrain’s monarch preapproved Sheikh Salman’s interactions with the Qataris.

Bahrain joined Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates in sanctioning Qatar in June over Doha’s alleged support for terrorism.

Sheikh Salman was initially jailed in December 2014 and later charged with inciting hatred against the regime. Amnesty and other rights groups have dismissed the charges against the opposition leader as politically motivated, calling for his immediate and unconditional release.
