A dozen human rights organizations, including Americans for Democracy & Human Rights in Bahrain (ADHRB), the Bahrain Center for Human Rights (BCHR) and the Bahrain Institute for Rights and Democracy (BIRD) demanded that Manama improve the standards in Jaw Prison.
Al-Khawaja, who is serving a life sentence over his role in Bahrain’s pro-democracy protests, had his personal belongings confiscated by prison authorities in recent months and his access to television, radio and books restricted.
Other political detainees at Jaw have also been subjected to similar restrictions.
Earlier this month, Al-Khawaja was banned from making phone calls after sending a letter to Manama’s interior ministry about the appalling living conditions at the detention facility.
“Al-Khawaja and the other high profile activists and human rights defenders have sent many letters of protest about these and previous prison restrictions, including the denial of medication and proper access to healthcare,” the rights groups explained.
The organizations called on Manama to grant detainees “access to medical care and sanitary conditions … [and] allow Abdulhadi Al-Khawaja and all prisoners proper access to families.”
