The Bahraini human rights defender, who was jailed last summer, is currently standing trial for criticizing the Saudi-led military campaign in Yemen and Manama’s use of torture.
He faces a 15-year prison term if convicted. Rajab is already serving a 2-year sentence over a separate set of charges.
Amnesty called on Manama to “quash his conviction and halt all proceedings against him.”
“He is a prisoner of conscience, detained solely for peacefully exercising his right to freedom of expression,” the rights group said on Friday, urging urgent action on the matter.
Amnesty also demanded Manama ensure that Rajab “is not subjected to torture or other ill-treatment” and is provided with access to family, lawyers and healthcare.
