Sheikh Qassim, who has been living under virtual ‘siege’ since Manama revoked his citizenship over a year ago, was diagnosed with an abdominal hernia last week, and a medical examiner concluded that he required urgent surgery.
The senior Shiite cleric is reportedly in critical condition following repeated delays by the authorities in providing him with desperately needed medical care.
LuaLua TV was informed by Bahrain’s opposition Al Wefaq party that the 80-year old was accompanied by his family.
LuaLua also learned that Sheikh Qassim’s departure from his home in Diraz, where he was held under house arrest since May, was accompanied by heightened ‘security’ measures in the area.
The country has been rocked by protests in recent days amid growing outrage over Manama’s treatment of Sheikh Qassim.
