Iranian FM calls for enhanced relations between Tehran, Baku

(AhlulBayt News Agency) - Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif described the existing relations between Tehran and Baku as “great”, stressing that the Islamic Republic will continue to enhance its ties with the neighboring Azerbaijan.

“We have great relations with Azerbaijan. In addition to the summit, we had a great conversation with his excellency, Ilham Aliyev, to discuss bilateral and international ties,” Zarif told reporters in Baku following a meeting with Azerbaijan’s president on Friday, according to AzerNews.

He added that Azerbaijan is a good neighbor for the Islamic Republic and “will continue these relations seriously."

Foreign Minister Zarif joined top foreign officials in Baku on Friday to attend the Heart of Asia Conference, which includes 14 participating and 17 supporting countries, as well as 12 international and regional organizations, such as the United Nations, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), the Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO) and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC).

Founded in 2011, Heart of Asia-Istanbul Process provides an agenda for regional cooperation in the ‘heart of Asia’ by placing Afghanistan at its center and engaging the regional countries in sincere cooperation for a peaceful and stable Afghanistan, as well as a secure and prosperous region as a whole, according to its official website.
