A Saudi-led bloc of countries classified Sheikh Hassan Sultan as a terrorist on Wednesday.
Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, the United Arab Emirates, and Egypt released a joint statement claiming that 2 entities and 11 individuals were blacklisted over their links to Qatar.
According to Al Wefaq, the move reflects the manner in which the term “terrorism” is being exploited, where anyone with a different opinion than that of the ruling regimes is labeled as a terrorist.
The group added that Sheikh Sultan’s political doctrine as well as his actions on the political and social level are not compatible with such a label.
Al Wefaq described the former deputy as an advocate of political reform and nonviolence pointing to his untarnished record as an opposition figure.
The group urged wisdom, logic and a recognition of exiting problems in Bahrain rather than a policy of unproductive revenge.
