Quran, Hadith competitions in Algeria ahead of Prophet’s Birthday

(AhlulBayt News Agency) - A series of Quran and Hadith competitions are being held in Algeria on the occasion of the birthday anniversary of Islam’s Holy Prophet (PBUH).

They have been organized by the country’s Awqaf and Religious Affairs Department.

Sayyid Zuhair Buzare, an official with the department, said the contests have so far been held in a number of mosques in the capital Algiers.

They are aimed at promoting memorization of the Quan and Hadiths, he added.

The official noted that men and women competed in separate sections in the competitions’ six categories.

He went on to say that winners will be awarded at a ceremony slated to be held at the Grand Mosque in Algiers on the birthday anniversary of the Holy Prophet (PBUH).

The 12th day of the month of Rabi al-Awwal in the lunar Hijri calendar is believed by Sunni Muslims to mark the birth anniversary of Prophet Mohammad (PBUH), while Shia Muslims regard the 17th day of the month as the birthday of the last prophet.
