Bahraini forces attack protesters rallying in solidarity with political detainees

(AhlulBayt News Agency) - Bahraini security forces unleashed ferocious attacks on protesters in the country’s village of Ma’ameer on Monday as local residents took to the streets in a show of solidarity with political detainees.

The peaceful marches, which started off with participants carrying posters of Bahrain’s most prominent prisoners of conscience, quickly descended into chaos as teargas canisters began raining down on the demonstrators.

The toxic smoke engulfed the streets of the northeastern village, which houses key industrial sites and sees frequent clashes between security forces and anti-regime protesters.

Similar scenes were repeated in other parts of the Gulf kingdom, including the Manama suburb of Juffair.

Bahraini security forces fired tear gas and stun grenades at the Juffair protesters, who were also rallying in solidarity political prisoners near the country’s US Embassy.

The latest unrest comes as the number of Bahrainis being jailed on politically motivated charges continues to climb.

Last week rights groups released a new study showing that the country’s prisons house 4,000 political detainees.
