Diraz residents summoned following protests near Sheikh Isa Qassim’s Home

(AhlulBayt News Agency) - A number of Diraz residents have been summoned and threatened by Bahrain’s security forces following Sunday’s demonstrations near the home of the country’s highest religious authority, Sheikh Isa Qassim.

Bahraini youths commemorating Ashura were attacked with teargas and rubber bullets as they approached the police cordon around Sheikh Qassim’s home, where the cleric has been under house arrest for over four months.

Security forces quickly tightened their siege on the area, deploying more than 10 armored vehicles, eight of which surrounded Sheikh Qassim’s residence.

Those who took part in Sunday’s protests held up portraits of the senior cleric, denouncing Bahrain’s rulers.

On May 23, security forces launched a deadly raid in Diraz, storming Sheikh Qassim’s home and killing five of his supporters in the process. The kingdom’s interior ministry also announced that it had detained nearly 300 people.
