BCHR calls on Manama to end targeting religious freedoms in Bahrain

(AhlulBayt News Agency) -The Bahrain Center for Human Rights (BCHR) called on Manama to halt its campaign against the religious freedoms of Bahrain’s Shiite majority.

The rights group voiced its concern over a spike in attacks targeting all displays associated with Ashura, which commemorates the martyrdom of Prophet Mohammad’s grandson, Imam Hussein.

According to the BCHR, Bahraini security forces removed Ashura displays in at least 21 areas across the Persian Gulf kingdom. When confronted with protesters, security forces responded by firing teargas and rubber bullets.

The BCHR recorded at least 12 arrests during protests in Bahrain’s Al Musalla and Ma’amir. Meanwhile, a number of local officials and religious figures were summoned and detained by security services over their role in the Ashura commemorations.

On Sunday, tens of thousands took part in processions across Bahrain marking Ashura. The marches were attacked in a number of towns and villages including Diraz and Nuwaidrat.
