“Ireland is also concerned by the severity of the curtailment of civil society in Bahrain, in particular reprisals against human rights defenders,” Ambassador Michael Gaffey said during his address to the 36th session of the UN Human Rights Council.
Since the Council’s session got underway on September 11, Bahrain’s public prosecutor has summoned and charged more than a dozen political and rights activists, while banning them from leaving the country.
The measures are widely seen as an attempt to curtail the activities of activists and restrict their freedom of movement during human rights forums like the one in Geneva.
