Bahraini opposition figure banned from traveling

(AhlulBayt News Agency) - Farida Ghulam has joined a list of more than a dozen political and rights activists that have been banned from traveling and charged with taking part in an “illegal” gathering by Bahrain’s public prosecutor in recent days.

Ghulam is a key figure in the country’s National Democratic Action Society also known as Wa’ad. She is also the wife of the party’s former Secretary General, Ebrahim Sharif, who faces the same charges as his spouse.

Both were charged after being summoned to appear for questioning by the prosecutor’s office.

The family has endured years of persecution, courtesy of the regime in Manama, with Sharif spending years behind bars for demanding political reforms in the Persian Gulf kingdom.

The latest wave of summonses began in the lead-up to the 36th session of the UN Human Rights Council, currently underway in Geneva, as Manama attempts to curtail the activities of activists and restrict their freedom of movement.
