“We condemn the abuses of the repressive [security] apparatuses that led the prisoners to launch their hunger strike,” the scholars said in a statement.
More than 1,000 political prisoners declared an open-ended hunger strike last weekend demanding better living conditions and an end to the systematic use of torture.
So far, their demands have been met by further abuse on the part of Manama’s security officials and prison authorities.
“You are not alone in your torment,” Thursday’s statement adds. “The loyal [Bahraini] people will never abandon you; you are the pioneers of their path, the title of their conscience, their pulse, and the leap of their spirit that is longing for freedom.”
