EU expresses deep concern over Bahrain’s deteriorating Human Rights situation

(AhlulBayt News Agency) - In a statement read out at the 36th session of the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva, the European Union (EU) said that it was “following with deep concern the continuing deterioration of the human rights situation” in Bahrain.

“The EU urges the authorities to respect the right to freedom of expression and peaceful assembly,” the statement added.

Calling “on all parties to engage in an inclusive dialogue,” the EU also urged Manama to apply a moratorium on executions.

The Persian Gulf kingdom has faced a wave of criticism from a number of delegations in Geneva over the regime’s human rights abuses.

In his opening remarks at this month’s session, the UN human rights chief, Zeid Ra’ad al-Hussein, said that “the democratic space in …[Bahrain] has essentially been shut down”.
