Shia groups gather in Melbourne for Eid al-Ghadir

(AhlulBayt News Agency) - Representatives of a number of Shia groups and associations from different nationalities held a gathering in Melbourne, Australia, on Sunday.

It was organized by Australia’s Yaseen Association in cooperation with "A Beacon of Hope” Institute on the occasion of Eid al-Ghadir, according to the association’s public relations office.

Iranian, Iraqi, Pakistani, Indian, Afghan and Lebanese Shias residing in Australia attended the event, which began with congregational Maghrib and Isha prayers.

After recitation of verses from the Quran, Sayyed Ahmad Hakim delivered a speech on the virtues of Imam Ali (AS).

There were also eulogy recitations in praise of the first Imam (AS).

Eid al-Ghadir is among important feasts and happy holidays of Shia Muslims held on the 18th day of Dhul-Hijja in the lunar Hijri calendar.

Ghadir was the day when according to reports, the Holy Prophet (PBUH) appointed Ali ibn Abi Talib (AS) as his caliph and the Imam after himself following an order from God. That event happened in the Prophet’s (PBUH) Hajjat al-Wida (the Farewell Hajj), in the year 10 Hijri/632 A.D. in a place called Ghadir Khumm.
