“Respect for human rights for everyone in Bahrain remains critical for reconciliation and long-term stability and security,” Jason Mack told the 36th session of the Council on Tuesday.
“We are concerned by severe restrictions on freedom of peaceful assembly, association, and expression in Bahrain,” Mack added.
Washington has come under growing criticism from rights groups in recent months over its military and political support for the regime in Manama.
In its latest reports, Amnesty International accused the US and “other countries that have leverage over Bahrain” of emboldening Manama “to intensify its endeavor to silence the few remaining voices of dissent”.
