Bahraini activist begins open-ended hunger strike

(AhlulBayt News Agency) - Jailed Bahraini human rights defender Mohammad Khalil Al-Shakouri started an open-ended hunger strike over his treatment in detention.

The 33-year-old was arrested when masked gunmen stormed his home in early July. He was interrogated by Manama’s security serviced for weeks before surfacing in Bahrain’s Dry Dock Detention Center in August.

Al-Shakouri is reportedly demanding to be allowed to see his son without the presence of a glass partition that separates the inmates from their visitors.

The news comes after 1,500 political detainees across Bahrain announced an open-ended hunger strike on Saturday, demanding better living conditions and an end to the systematic use of torture by the authorities.

Last month, conditions in Dry Dock were described as ‘intolerable’ and ‘tragic’.
