The Public Prosecutor in Manama remanded Sayyed Al-Mashaal in custody on Wednesday, extending his detention for an additional week.
The cleric is being accused of inciting “hatred against the regime” and using sectarian rhetoric.
His arrest came only hours before the US State Department released its annual report on international religious freedom, which highlighted Manama’s abuses.
The US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson blasted Bahrain’s rulers for continuing to “question, detain and arrest Shiite clerics, community members and opposition politicians”.
