Mosque open day in Victoria, Australia aims to strengthen spirit

(AhlulBayt News Agency) - Mosques across the state of Victoria in Australia will open their doors next month to strengthen community spirit and break down misconceptions.

The Islamic Council of Victoria’s Mosque Open Day, funded by the Victorian Multicultural Commission and Office of Multicultural Affairs and Social Cohesion, is on Sunday, May 7.

Islamic community members will hold free guided tours as part of the event and there will be talks about the role mosques play in Australian society.

Among the 12 mosques taking part will be the Serenity Foundation in Somerton.

Honorary president Ibrahim Dellal said he hoped by welcoming people they would establish good community relationships.

"We want to get to know the (public), the (public) to get to know us, answer questions and let them watch prayers,” he said.

"We are people of compassion, caring and sharing.”

ICV president Mohamed Mohideen said while mosques were a place of worship for Muslims, they were also a site of community harmony and a support network.

"We want the Victorian community to look beyond what is portrayed of Muslims and build dialogue and friendships, while sharing mutual respect and understanding,” Mr Mohideen said.

Meadow Heights Mosque is also participating.

The event is on from 10am to 4pm but individual mosques may vary their opening hours.
