Sunni Muslims victims of takfiri terrorism: former Australian mufti

Sheikh Taj El-Din Hamid Hilaly, the former grand Mufti of Australia, dismissed Takfiri groups’ claim that they are defending Sunni Muslims, stressing that Sunnis themselves have been a main target of Takfiri terrorism.

(AhlulBayt News Agency) - Takfiri groups call themselves saviors and claim to be defending Sunnis but the fact is that Sunni Muslim have been a victim of these groups’ terrorist activities, he said on the sidelines of the 30th International Islamic Unity Conference in Tehran.

Sunnis also want to get rid of these terrorists, said Sheikh Hilaly, who is a member of the Supreme Council of Islamic Awakening World Assembly.

He further slammed those who support Takfiris, saying the West has given rise to these groups to use them for its own purposes.

The former Australian Mufti referred to the threat of extremism and underscored the important role of Muslim scholars and thinkers in raising people’s awareness and insight in order to prevent the spread of Takfiri and extremist ideologies.

On the Islamic unity conference, Sheikh Hilaly said the media should play their role in spreading the message of the conference, which is enhanced unity in the Muslim world.

The 30th international conference on Islamic unity was held in the Iranian capital of Tehran on December 15-17.

Muslim figures, scholars and thinkers from over 50 countries, including Malaysia, Russia, Indonesia, Iraq, Lebanon, the US, Britain, Australia, Tunisia, China, Egypt, Thailand, and Algeria attended the three-day event.

Role of Takfiri currents in fomenting discord among Muslims, the need for countering Takfiri currents in order for realizing Islamic unity, the danger of Takfiri currents for keeping alive the issue of Palestine, and the Zionist regime’s use of Takfiri currents were among the topics to discussed at the conference.

The World Forum for Proximity of Islamic Schools of Thought (WFPIST) annually holds the international conference on the occasion of birthday anniversary of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and Islamic Unity Week.
