Bahraini forces clash with protesters marking Martyrs' Day

Bahraini forces have clashed with people demonstrating across the Persian Gulf country to commemorate Martyrs' Day.

(AhlulBayt News Agency) - The protests were held in Sitra, Nawidarat and Abu Saiba on Friday, the Arabic-language Bahrain Mirror news website reported.

Regime troops used tear gas and rubber bullets to disperse the demonstrators.

Since 1994, Bahrainis mark Martyrs' Day on December 17 following the extrajudicial killing of two nationals during the 90s uprising.

Bahrain, a close ally of the US in the Persian Gulf region, has seen a wave of anti-regime protests since mid-February 2011.

Scores of people have been killed and hundreds of others wounded or detained amid Manama’s ongoing crackdown on dissent and widespread discrimination against the Shia majority.

Several human rights groups have frequently censured the Al Khalifah regime for rampant human rights abuses against the opposition and anti-regime demonstrators.
