Ashura Commemoration Held by Shia and Sunni Muslim in Dhaka, Bangladesh

The Tazia procession was brought out to commemorate Ashura by several members of the Shia and Sunni Muslim community under strict surveillance of the law enforcers and ended without any disturbance

(AhlulBayt News Agency) - The central Tazia procession was brought out from the Hussaini Dalan Imambara at 10 am and it ended after arrived at Jhigatola’s makeshift Karbala arranged by Dhaka South City Corporation.

Though there is no exact counting how many, but It is estimated that around 300-400 thousands Shia community people are living in the capital, said MM Firoz Hossain, superintendent of Hussaini Dalan Imambara.

“This year our community people attending this procession are under strict surveillance of the law enforcers. Police are also walking with our procession for security purposes.”

We are very thankful to Prime Minister and DMP Commissioner for paving the way to observe our traditional procession with high security, he added.

Apart from the main procession from the Imambara, the Shias brought out several numbers of Tazias from different part of Dhaka, marking the holy Ashura.

Though this year the mourners were not seen lamenting by flagellating themselves with sharp weapons during Tazia procession.

Syed Fasih Hossain, a sub-committee member of Hussaini Dalan Imambara Management committee who also attended the Tazia procession and lamented during the procession said: “Our procession intends for peace, we wish all the Muslim of the country stand together on one platform and fight against all evil.”

In some areas of the capital, Sunni Muslims also brought out the Tazia procession as well in observance of the Ashura.

President M Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina issued separate messages on the occasions paying deep respects to Hazrat Imam Hossain (RA) and other martyrs of Karbala.

On this day in the Hijri year of 61, Hazrat Imam embraced martyrdom in the hands of soldiers of Yazid at Karbala desert for the supremacy of justice and righteousness.

Different religious organisations have chalked out various programmes to observe the day in a befitting manner.

The day is a public holiday.
